Japan’s third-largest prefecture is renowned for its produce. Flounder and skipjack tuna are among the delicacies caught off the Pacific coast. In the central region, conditions are favourable for growing fruit: peaches, Japanese pears and apples fill the orchards, consolidating Fukushima’s standing as a “fruit paradise”. Further west, the mountainous Aizu region is known for its rice and saké.

Located in the northern part of the Goto Archipelago, Ojika Island is one of the 17 islands that comprise Ojika Town. Several kilometres away, the mountainous Nozaki Island gained World Heritage status as one of the Nagasaki region’s hidden Christian sites. Largely uninhabited, it has a rugged coastline and is home to the picturesque Nokubi Beach. Unique flora and fauna now grow among the remains of old villages.

Towering peaks and sprawling fields define the Tokachi landscape. Wheat, soya beans and an abundance of produce are joined by wine, cheese and dairy made in the region.

Tsuruoka Science Park, home to Suiden Terrasse, has been attracting bio-venture firms, research laboratories and innovators to the region for more than 20 years, contributing to its revitalisation.

Nishi Awakura continues to nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs. A Zero, a company based in the village that works to build the local economy, launched Local Venture School in 2015 with support from the municipality. The programme’s graduates work in fields ranging from forestry and woodwork to hat-making, midwifery and children’s education, further consolidating the village’s standing as a growing hub for new ideas.

Tsubame-Sanjo’s products have a global presence. Yukiwa’s cocktail shakers can be found in the hands of leading bartenders, while Snow Peak’s takibi fire sets are a camping-kit staple. Edged tools cater to every need, from fish-filleting knives to barber’s scissors, garden shears and nail clippers. Connoisseurs are drawn to the immaculate craftsmanship of Gyokusendo’s copperware.
