A former academic, television personality and cabinet minister, Yoichi Masuzoe was elected governor of Tokyo in early 2014. Despite being expelled from the conservative Liberal Democratic Party in 2010, his campaign received its backing in the election. In his campaign, Masuzoe, who once served as minister of health, labour and welfare, promised to address the crisis of Japan’s low birth rate and care for Tokyo’s ageing population but, inevitably, his first term is being dominated by preparations for the Olympic…
