In an era of outsourcing production and cost-cutting, genuine craft is more important and meaningful than ever. We’re always heartened that Japan has fostered its culture of artisanship to the point where towns still specialise in certain skills. Hasami in Kyushu is one such place: the town gives its name to a ceramics manufacturer where workers are expert shapers, moulders and glazers (and sticklers for detail) – all of which guarantees an even finish to its enviable porcelain products.
